Pardon if this is a silly question but just going on looks how do I tell the diffs between a 350 and 500? When did the carb end? I'm looking at buying a 500 but prices for a 2012/13 start from R20k all the way to R95k on gumtree. What are the pitfalls to look out for? And why the huge difference in price for what seems the same type of bike?

Hi jmg, outwardly the badging, the engine number first digits can be decoded, at least to give the factory info. I'm not clued up on these newer models, you could try this link www.quora.com/How-do-you-decode-VIN-Vehicle-Identification-Number-of-a-Royal-Enfield-MotorcycleGoogle will show you other tables, the USA use other VIN tables though. Older models have their own decoding schemes. The throttle body or carb will be larger for a 500 or 535 (Conti GT for example is a 535), than a 350. Hopefully some other member will advise.

So I went to look at this one, rode it loved it! However a few things bugged me, firstly it sleeps outside under a blanket, grass growing under it, hasn't been ridden in a few months but started occasionally. It didn't start as easy as one would expect. Wouldn't idle until it warmed up but had what sounded to me like tappits/lifters/valve guides knocking but in fairness this went away when riding and was only there on idle. Omw when I rode it it was all I imagined. Needs a new rear tyre, chain looked new but the sprocket looked like 30 0000 km. Some of the dash light weren't working. It had a few scratches, was dropped once (side stand not out) and had 3 services from RAD. The fourth was claimed to have been done but not stamped. Man this bike put a huge smile on my face. The owner and I seem to differ on the value so negotiates are ongoing. Any comments? Royal Enfield 500 Classic www.olx.co.za/ad/royal-enfield-500-classic-ID15OdSC.html

jmg you need to know that these bikes are suited to cruising at possibly around 110kph and although short bursts of speed are okay high speeds must not be maintained unless extensive mods are done. On some models the automatic decompressor normally makes a "tappet" sound at idle. Electric start is typically a known weakness (sprag clutch failure). They are really nice to ride as you've already found out ?

The decompressor part I didn't know about so thank you for that help. This specific bike the stater worked, it was just like it had no fuel. Yes the ride just made me want it even more!
